Earlier this year, Project Platypus hosted a Squirrel Glider Community Information Day, bringing together locals, families and wildlife enthusiasts to celebrate and learn about one of the Northern Gariwerd's most remarkable residents.
Northern Gariwerd is home to the last remaining population of squirrel gliders in western Victoria, and the enthusiasm on display that day was a powerful reminder of how deeply our community cares about their future.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear from Project Platypus staff about the equipment used for night surveys, and from Dr. Elia Pirtle, who shared exciting results from recent surveys and spoke about the importance of bio-links in supporting squirrel glider movement across the landscape.
Guests also got up close with a real-life squirrel glider and other native wildlife, a highlight for young attendees especially.
The event was free and open to all, with presentations, activities and lunch rounding out a memorable day for the community.
Our Tail of the Squirrel Glider project continues, and there are plenty of ways to get involved, from habitat surveys and community planting days to citizen science workshops. Visit the link below to learn more and join us in helping squirrel gliders thrive in Northern Gariwerd.
